Melandri shines on the mud at MX event

Spoiler for news

New Yamaha World Superbike Team rider Marco Melandri showed his prowess on a motocross track last weekend as he took a YZ450F, supplied by the factory Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team, to second and first positions in two cold and muddy races for charity at the Faenza circuit.

The 28 year old finished as the overall winner and was competing against other road racers and other Italian celebrities at the event created to raise funds and awareness for the Wings for Life foundation, assisting their research into cures for spinal cord injury and paralysis.

The hills of the Faenza – a track that closed the 2008 FIM Motocross World Championship and at which Yamaha Monster Energy motocross Team celebrated capturing the MX1-GP title with David Philippaerts – saw Melandri gun his YZ450F past the likes of Andrea Dovizioso and Supermoto racer Cristian Ravaglia. It was the first outing for Melandri in blue colours after his test on the YZF-R1 at Valencia last week and was a throwback to the days when the Italian took to the local motocross circuit at Donington Park with Carlos Checa on YZ450Fs in 2003; the year that he made his MotoGP debut with the legendary M1.

“I feel very happy about everything! It was a great charity race, the motocross guys were pushing really hard so it felt good to win,” said Melandri, who is a big fan of the sport, is friends with world champion Antonio Cairoli and is a frequent visitor to MX-GPs. “It was good fun and a big satisfaction; it was my first ride on the 2011 Yamaha YZ450F, it is a great bike and it’s my first victory for Yamaha!” he added with a smile.

Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team Manager - Massimo Raspanti
“We lent Marco a standard 2011 YZ450F and made the shock spring a little softer because of his weight and also added an Akrapovic pipe; he was really happy with the bike and was impressed with the power,” commented Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team Manager Massimo Raspanti. “He was battling it out with Dovizioso in the two heats and I was surprised by his ability. I knew he would be quick but not that fast and his style was also good. He didn’t change much on the bike, no handlebar positions or levers and was a pleasure to work with. We chatted about World Superbike and he seemed pretty pumped about the Valencia test and the new challenge he has.”

Melandri will now head to Australia at the beginning of December to continue tests on the 2011 R1 in preparation for his first attempt at the World Superbike Championship next year.

Chisholm takes 3rd at first night of Supercross Paris-Bercy

Spoiler for news

Motoconcepts Yamaha’s Kyle Chisholm took his YZ450F to third position on the first night of three at the popular Supercross Paris-Bercy for a decent debut at the annual event and the biggest Indoor SX meeting in Europe.

The Palais Omnisports in the French capital was full to capacity for an entertaining and noisy opening evening in which Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team’s Gautier Paulin was able to shine on the YZ250FM in the opening half of the schedule while Chisholm was eventually able to walk away with the plaudits.

The narrow and challenging course offered a lot of grip and became harder as the night wore on. Paulin was among the fastest in practice and had the arena on its feet with a remarkable effort in Superpole to earn the quickest lap. The Frenchman then won the L’Americaine eliminator heat from main rival Justin Barcia. Chisholm on the other hand had a turgid time and started the Main event from the back of the gate.

Paulin’s quest for glory did not last a lap as he ran wide over the biggest jump of the course and clipped a trackside obstacle that threw him to the ground. The 20 year old was dazed but unharmed. Chisholm meanwhile took advantage of many crashes around him to move up the field and terrorise the back of MX2-GP World Champion Marvin Musquin.

“The night did not start well but it ended OK,” the American said. “It has been pretty hard with this being my first Bercy and getting used to the different programme. I struggled on the soft track in practice and it took a bit of time to get the bike set-up. I knew my fitness was good and the main event was a lot of laps. I made a decent start and just kept going.”

Supercross Paris-Bercy continues on Saturday where the same line-up will push for the 'King of Bercy' title.

Chisholm makes the top three again at Bercy while Paulin is fourth

Spoiler for news

Kyle Chisholm again scored third position on the second night of action at the Supercross Paris-Bercy and now stands on the edge of the ‘King’ of Bercy title in his first visit to the prestigious event in the French capital.

The Motoconcepts Yamaha rider repeated his top three finish from Friday’s opening salvo on the YZ450F and remains the most consistent racer in the contest and the only one to scale the podium on two occasions. The American once more started from a lowly gate slot and efficiently picked off competitors to arrive to third. Following behind was Yamaha Monster Energy’s Gautier Paulin who was bustled into fourth on the works YZ450FM by an excited capacity-crowd at the Palais Omnisports from a mid-pack start.

The venue provided an electric atmosphere unique to Bercy as the French hold the annual SX extravaganza – now in its 28th edition – close to their hearts. Yamaha Motor France made their presence felt by turning a section of the stand blue. Paulin was cheered on to the top four across a soft and rough track although he felt the effects of his spill yesterday with a stiff neck.

Grant Langston was unable to participate on what was supposed to be his last race as a professional after he briefly dislocated his hip in Friday’s Main Event. The decorated South African tried to ride during practice on Saturday but was in too much discomfort.

The third and final stage of the Supercross Paris-Bercy takes place on Sunday afternoon and a victory for Chisholm will stretch Yamaha’s

Kyle Chisholm - 3rd position
“I had some bad luck in the elimination race and didn’t have a good gate pick for the Main, so my start wasn’t great but I came up through the pack and reached third. Again I needed a couple more laps –or maybe just to go a bit faster! - to get close enough to make a pass for second. I know I can go for the win if I can get out front at the start; that’s the plan for tomorrow.”

Gautier Paulin at Bercy
4th position
“I was a little stiff from yesterday and the track was a bit dangerous because it is soft and worn. In the tunnel I think we had gone through the mud to the wood panels and it was really slippery. I had bad luck with the inflatable being in the wrong place last night but I had some fun this time. The ground was really soft for the 450 so we needed to go a bit harder with the suspension but I was not quite ready to do that for the race; tomorrow we will make the change in practice and hopefully it will be a bit better.”

Two Yamahas in LA top five

The third round of seventeen in the 2011 AMA Supercross series saw San Manuel LandM Yamaha’s James Stewart take a third consecutive podium finish with 2nd position. Across a slippery and difficult track inside the inaugural setting of the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Stewart was joined at the top of the leader-board by JGR’s Justin Brayton who rode to 5th on his YZ450F.

The unroofed arena in the heart of LA became the 40th venue to host an AMA SX event and provided a slick and challenging layout for the riders of the premier class and the West Coast Lites competition. Stewart, who celebrated his 38th career victory last week in Phoenix and is now joint-third on the all-time winners list, made a reasonably good start and was able to seize the lead early in the 20 lap Main Event after Brett Metcalfe crashed and he overtook reigning champion Ryan Dungey.

The 2009 No.1 would only front the field until mid-race distance when he made a mistake and his front wheel slipped away but was able to recover and place his YZ450F into the runner-up slot behind Ryan Villopoto before the chequered flag.

“I got into the lead and then Ryan ran into me, and it was like, ‘All right, let’s go...’ and then I just came into a corner and washed the front end out,” said the 25 year old Floridian. “I’m very, very, very disappointed with this one. I just threw it away. I feel bad for my team because we’ve been working hard and you can’t win them on the ground. This won’t happen again.”

Justin Brayton

Brayton (pictured) would cross the line three seconds ahead of Kevin Windham for his best ranking of the season so far. Motoconcepts Yamaha’s Kyle Chisholm came home 10th.

After three meetings Stewart is second in the standings and trails Villopoto by 5 points. Brayton is eighth with Chisholm holding ninth. Round four takes place at the Oak-Alameda Stadium in Oakland, California next Saturday.
