Clippers beat Lakers 102-94 behind 33 by Paul

By BETH HARRIS

LOS ANGELES (AP) Chris Paul scored 33 points, Blake Griffin had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Clippers led all the way in beating the Lakers 102-94 on Saturday night despite 42 points by Kobe Bryant.

Chauncey Billups added 19 points, former Laker Caron Butler had 13 points and DeAndre Jordan had 10 rebounds in the Clippers' second win in four days over one of the NBA's elite teams.

The Clippers beat Miami 95-89 in overtime on Wednesday and have won five of their last six. Paul limped off after hitting a jumper in the final minutes.

Bryant notched his fourth straight game of 40 or more points but the Lakers had their five-game winning streak snapped by their Staples Center co-tenants, who beat them twice in the preseason.

The Lakers got no closer than five points early in the fourth quarter as the visiting team. Bryant broke out for 21 points in the third, but he was limited to 10 in the fourth against the Clippers' double teams.

Billups and Paul hit consecutive 3-pointers to help the Clippers extend their lead to 67-53 midway through the third.

Bryant took over from there, scoring 17 of the Lakers' final 19 points of the quarter to close to 76-72. He began and ended the spurt with 3-pointers and in between hit 7 of 8 free throws while the Clippers were held to nine points over the final 5 minutes.

The Clippers' biggest first-half lead was 55-42 at the break. They outshot and outrebounded the Lakers, who were better in the paint.

The Lakers twice closed within three points in the second quarter, but the Clippers outscored them 16-6 to end the period, with Billups, Paul and Griffin combining for 14 points.

The Clippers opened the game on a 13-4 run, then outscored the Lakers 13-9 to lead after the first quarter. Things got chippy in the final 12 seconds when Darius Morris went up for a basket after Paul was whistled for a foul and Griffin pushed off him with both hands as Morris came down.

Lakers coach Mike Brown got incensed and was called for a technical, while nothing was called on Griffin. Morris had the last word, though, when he sank a jumper from before the half-court line at the buzzer as Paul tried to cut him off. Metta World Peace and Grififin also had technicals.

Notes: Clippers F Brian Cook left midway through the second quarter with a sprained left ankle. ... The Clippers improved to 5-1 at home and 6-0 this season when taking a lead into the fourth. ... The Clippers have sold out all six of their home games. ... The Lakers were playing their fifth game of the week and their 14th of the season, tying Chicago for most games played. ... The Clippers have played just nine games, fewest in the league. ... Clippers backup G Mo Williams missed the game because of an injured right foot that he hurt on Tuesday at Portland. ... Lakers G Jason Kapono is adjusting to sleepless nights after his wife gave birth to premature twin girls named Campbell and Isla earlier in the week. "Thirty minutes is like three hours. It's all been a blur," he said.
LOS ANGELES–For three quarters, the Clippers did almost everything they wanted.

Entering a stretch of three games in three days and missing Chris Paul and Mo Williams, they opened up a 13-point halftime lead and carried it into the fourth quarter. But cold shooting, turnovers, and missed free throws allowed the New Jersey Nets back in the game.

L.A. held on, though, behind double-digit scoring from all five starters and a 3-pointer by Chauncey Billups to finish off the stubborn Nets for a 101-91 win at Staples Center.

“I thought everybody played a great game today,” said Billups, who finished with 20 points. “I thought Randy Foye was awesome in Chris and Mo’s absence. And he’s always ready. He’s a true professional.”

Paul (strained left hamstring) and Williams (sore right foot), who missed his second straight game, were out of the lineup along with forward Brian Cook (sprained ankle).

Blake Griffin had 23 points and 14 rebounds with his usual array of highlights at the rim and crashes to hardwood. He threw down a spectacular left-handed dunk over Humphries off a wrap-around pass from Foye, tumbled over a patron courtside diving for a loose ball, and fell into the camera well near New Jersey’s basket late in the fourth after getting tangled up with Kris Humphries (14 points and seven rebounds).

Caron Butler chipped in 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists. DeAndre Jordan had 12 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, while Foye contributed 12 points, 10 assists and an outstanding defensive effort against star point guard Deron Williams, who managed just 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

“We got a lot of production from a lot of guys,” Del Negro said. “I thought Randy Foye’s defense all night. You know, Deron’s as a hard of a cover in this league as there is and he was draped all over him as much as possible.”

Despite the 10-point victory, their sixth in a row at home, there was a sense the short-handed Clippers (7-3) could have made things a little easier.

The Nets (3-11) trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half, but Deron Williams tied things at 81 with 6:46 remaining in the game on a 3-pointer from the left wing. The run was sparked by Williams and rookie guard MarShon Brooks, who scored 13 points in the third quarter and totaled a team-high 19 for the game. It also helped that the Clippers managed just seven points in the first 5:26 of the fourth and missed 16 of their 35 free throws.

“Our ball movement got a little stagnant. We missed some easy shots and it got them back in the game,” Del Negro said. “We had a pretty good cushion most of the night, when they cut it we made some big plays.”

After Williams tied it, Jordan converted a two-handed dunk off a feed from Billups. Brooks answered with a contested jumper from 19 feet, but Foye ran off consecutive layups, including a breakaway off a Butler steal. The Clippers maintained near a five-point lead for the next two minutes until Billups dribbled into a 26-foot 3-pointer from the right wing to essentially put the Nets away.

The Clippers had a chance to pull away in the third quarter, but Griffin missed two free throws, Gomes fouled Anthony Morrow shooting a 3-pointer, and Evans missed 1-of-2 free throws. Brooks promptly responded for the Nets with a straightaway 3-pointer to slice the Clippers lead to 71-61.

With a chance to pull away in the third quarter, Griffin missed two free throws, Gomes fouled Morrow shooting a 3-pointer, and Evans missed 1-of-2 free throws. Brooks promptly responded for the Nets with a straightaway 3-pointer to slice the Clippers lead to 71-61.

“We played harder than them and played with more energy than them in the third and fourth quarter,” Brooks said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win because of our effort.”

Nets head coach Avery Johnson thought the problem for New Jersey was the hole they dug for themselves early.

The Clippers led 32-17 after one quarter. Butler sparked the hot start, opening with 15 points, including 10 in a row at one stretch. It was the highest scoring quarter for any Clippers player this season.

NOTES

It was the second time that all five Clippers starters scored in double figures. They also accomplished the feat in the home opener against Chicago… Nets head coach Avery Johnson was whistled for a technical foul in the first quarter. It was the third straight game an opposing coach has received one… During a four-minute stretch in the first quarter (5:06 to 0:56), the Clippers scored 18 points… Butler has scored exactly 20 points in four of the last five games… The Clippers out-rebounded New Jersey, 46-35. It’s the third time in the last four games L.A. has led in rebounding, after failing to do so in six straight.

Spoiler for "Billups' 3 with second left lifts Clips over Mavs"
Billups' 3 with second left lifts Clips over Mavs

Posted Jan 19 2012 1:56AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) Chauncey Billups hit a winning 3-pointer with 1 second left as the Los Angeles Clippers stunned the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks 91-89 on Wednesday night.
Mo Williams made his first seven shots and finished with 26 points off the bench in his return to the lineup from a sore right foot, and DeAndre Jordan had 19 points and nine rebounds for the undermanned Clippers, playing their third game in three days.
Blake Griffin had 17 rebounds along with 14 points and seven assists - the last one setting up Billups' rainbow from the right of the key.
Clippers point guard Chris Paul missed his third straight game because of a left hamstring strain. Brian Cook sat out his third in a row with a sprained left ankle.
Dirk Nowitzki and Delonte West each scored 17 points for Dallas. Jason Kidd, playing his third game after missing the previous four because of back spasms, played 15 scoreless minutes in the first half and finished with five points and 10 assists. The 17-year veteran was 1 for 9 from the field against the Lakers, including 0 for 8 from 3-point range.
Jason Terry made his only two 3-point baskets of the game in the final 37 seconds, the second coming with 5 seconds to play after losing Jordan on a switch and getting himself all alone at the top of the lane.
The Mavericks played without Vince Carter, who sprained his left foot on the final play of Monday night's 73-70 loss to the Lakers when he tried to position himself for a 3-point shot that he missed at the buzzer. The team's second-leading scorer off the bench returned to Dallas to get examined by team doctors.
The Clippers snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Mavericks, beating them for only the second time in their last 18 meetings.
Jordan's dunk and Griffin's layup gave the Clippers an 88-33 lead with 1:29 remaining. Dallas' Ian Mahinmi missed both free throws at the other end, but Terry's first 3-pointer to cut the margin to 88-86. Billups missed a 12-footer, and Griffin forced a jump ball with Nowitzki on the ensuing rebound with 14.9 seconds to play.
Griffin got the tip to Billups, who caught it off-balance and lost it out of bounds. Terry hit his second 3 on Dallas' next possession, and Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro called a timeout to set up what proved to be the winning basket.
Neither team led by more than six points until Jordan completed a three-point play to give the Clippers a 64-57 advantage with 6 minutes left in the third quarter. They led by as many as nine before Dallas used a 14-5 run to pull into a 71-all tie heading to the fourth.
Williams, who sat out the previous three games, was the first player off the Clippers' bench and scored 18 points to help Los Angeles take a 52-51 halftime lead. Jordan, who hadn't taken more than six shots in any of his first 11 games this season, was 5 for 8 from the field in the half with 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Billups scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes, matching his total through 24 minutes in a rout Tuesday at Utah. Williams replaced him with 5:26 left in the first quarter, scoring 11 points to help the Clippers take a 31-27 lead into the second. The Mavericks opened the quarter with a 9-0 run before Williams stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer.
Caron Butler missed his first seven shots over 27 scoreless minutes before ending the drought on an 18-footer that gave the Clippers a 68-62 lead with 3:05 left in the third.
Notes: Since moving to Los Angeles for the 1984-85 campaign, the Clippers are 17-69 against teams that won an NBA title the previous season. The franchise was 20-46 against defending NBA champs during the Buffalo and San Diego years. ... Jordan reached double digits in field-goal attempts for the fifth time in 215 NBA games. His previous career high was 12. ... The Clippers have allowed fewer than 100 points in each of their eight victories, and more than 100 in each of their four losses. This was the sixth time they held an opponent under 90. ... With 23,050 career points, Nowitzki is 90 away from overtaking Hall of Famer and former Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor for 22nd place all-time. The only active players with more points than Nowitzki are Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. ... Kidd played in his 1,278th regular-season game, tying A.C. Green for 15th place all-time, and is 15 steals shy of Michael Jordan's total of 2,514 for second place in that category. ... Dallas is 0-7 when allowing 90 or more points and 8-0 when holding its opponent under 90.
