The 2012 WRC Rally Argentina will be the longest route in the sport's recent history
By Tony Watson and David Evans Friday, December 23rd 2011, 20:23 GMT

Spoiler for news

Rally Argentina organisers have issued the longest World Rally Championship route in recent history for the 2012 event.

The route for the classic South American rally was one of the talking points of this season, with the event putting itself forward as a test case for the return of the endurance style event favoured by FIA president Jean Todt.

The organisers haven't been entirely revolutionary, however. The rally will remain based in Villa Carlos Paz, shunning the potential for starting in Buenos Aires and running down through the country. Plans to incorporate competition in neighboring Uruguay or Chile have also been shelved.

What remains is a route with 19 stages and more than 300 miles of competition in three days.

The April 26-29 event has around 100 competitive miles more than the average on the 13 rounds of this year's series.

The longest day of the event is the opening leg, with two runs at the 32-mile Ascochinga-Agua de Oro test helping to tally 121 miles. The sting in the tail of the event has been provided by the El Durazno-Ambul stage at 41 miles.

Much of the route for the event is new - but the classic El Condor stage has been retained, albeit split in two with the run into Copina being utilized for the Sunday afternoon powerstage.

Rally Argentina itinerary 2012:

Double delight for Cumbrian rally firm M-Sport

by Glenn Patterson
Last updated at 20:55, Friday, 23 December 2011

Spoiler for news
It is that time of year again when drivers and teams are jostling for the best deals for next year’s motorsport championships, but one person to pull it out of the bag is M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson.

۩•• World Rally Championship ••۩
Malcolm Wilson

Just last week Ford committed to two more years in the FIA World Rally Championship alongside its long-time rally partner M-Sport. At the same time it confirmed Petter Solberg, world rally champion in 2003, would join Jari-Matti Latvala to form the team’s challenge for world honours in 2012.

Dovenby-based M-Sport has successfully operated Ford’s WRC activities since 1997 and will continue to build and prepare the Fiesta WRC car at its state-of-the-art facility near Cockermouth.

M-Sport recently completed its ladder of opportunity, a structured path to take young and talented rally drivers from the grass-roots to the top level in Ford Fiestas. From the entry-level MS1 car, drivers can progress via the increasingly more powerful R2, S2000 and Regional Rally Car models to the top-billing World Rally Car.

But Ford’s decision is not just welcomed by M-Sport, it also allows the championship organisers to breathe a sigh of relief. This year’s series is set to have less support than last with competitor numbers predicted to decrease. Even Wilson’s son Matthew and his Carlisle co-driver Scott Martin have still to finalise a deal for next year, with discussions ongoing to try and secure the budget.

Wilson and Martin finished off this season in style with a fifth place at rally GB marking the pair’s best finish at the British round of the WRC, and securing their most successful season to date.

But time is running out. This year, competitors don’t have long after the Christmas break until the first rally – and this time it’s a big one to kick off the year. Rallye Monte Carlo is one of the most famous across the world and this year it kicks off the world rally championship in style.

Meanwhile Carlisle tyre manufacturer DMACK Tyres is also getting ready for next year’s world rally championship and recently released its range of tyres for the new season.

As part of the collection, DMACK has designed and tested a brand new studded asphalt winter tyre specifically for the demands of Monte Carlo. The 18” DMT-ICE features an aggressive open tread pattern to deal with snow and ice, and the 224 metal pin studs, each with 2mm protrusion, will help maximise grip and traction.

Also for Monte Carlo, a new extra-soft compound of its asphalt tyre will be available. The company, headed by Dick Cormack, has also been developing its gravel tyre, which was used by Estonian driver Ott Tanak to finish sixth at Rally GB in Wales last month.

“We’re really excited about the new range of WRC tyres for 2012,” said Cormack. “After such a great finish to our inaugural season in the world championship, with a sixth at Rally GB, we are keen to raise the performance and keep the momentum moving. We’ve undertaken a huge amount of development in our first year and now it’s time to put that knowledge into practice.”

Finally, if you were planning on going to Croft for the Christmas Stages Rally to catch some festive motorsport action then you should know that the organisers have been forced to change the date to bank holiday Monday January 2.

Seventy crews will now contest the 40 stage miles over seven stages, which are traditionally coated in ice and snow, delivering a winter challenge for competitors.

Former double-winner Kevin Procter is seeded at number one in the Subaru WRC car which took him to victory in 2008 and 2009.

Local honour will be upheld by West Cumbria Motorsport Club’s Darren Rutter and Ann Forster in their Ford Escort Mk1.

MINI misses WRC deadline

۩•• World Rally Championship ••۩

Quote:
MINI has missed the deadline to take part in the 2012 World Rally Championship.

The deadline was December 20th and no formal explanation has been given for the brand’s absence.

Rumour and speculation states that there have been problems between MINI and Prodrive, the company which develops and runs the WRC car.

Prodrive is apparently in talks with the FIA to gain entry to the first rally of the season in Monte Carlo
