St. James Park Story
Spoiler for SJP

St. James' Park, is the oldest football stadium in the North East, football having first played on the turf as early as 1880.

The story of the development of Newcastle United's traditional headquarters on the edge of the city centre has been one of much intrigue featuring intense local politics over the years. It has been a talking point in the region for generations, and even at one stage led to words being spoken in the House of Commons.

The ground has been the home of three clubs; Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End who moved to the arena in the summer of 1892 shortly before changing their name to Newcastle United.

Situated on a small hill overlooking the city and part of the historic Town Moor owned by the Freemen of the City - which further complicated any development proposals - St James Park is very close to the spot of the city's execution gallows, the last hanging taking place in 1844, less than 40 years before football was first played in the vicinity.

Back in Victorian Tyneside, St James Park was barely a rough patch of grazing land and had a notorious slope, a drop of fully 18 feet from the north to south goal. Local butchers could still graze their animals on the pitch before being led to slaughter!

The ground was bounded by Leazes Park and the exquisite Georgian Leazes Terrace, built to house some of the elegant ladies and gents of Tyneside. While the classical architectural features of Leazes Terrace provided a magnificent backdrop to the arena, it would in the future cause the Club untold difficulties in trying to develop stands around such a historic and listed building.

By the time Newcastle East End had been installed at St James Park development had only been completed in a minor way. And when Newcastle United started to take part in Football League action a small stand had been erected, but local residents were soon complaining to the Town Clerk and threatened to take legal proceedings to stop the "intolerable nuisance" of playing football!

With Newcastle United's promotion to the First Division in 1898, the club made a big effort to start to develop the ground. However, approvals from the local corporation came very slowly and in February 1899 it was recorded that the club were even prepared to move from the site because of the poor state of the pitch and accommodation.

Major building work eventually started though, with a new stand at the Gallowgate End being erected, the pitch being levelled and re-laid and a terrace formed on the other sides of the ground. A corrugated iron fence enclosed the ground and the capacity was announced at 30,000.

A much bigger and grandiose development plan was put in to action only 5 years later when a complete reconstruction of the ground took place. United's growing stature - they were to win three Championships in the coming years - prompted the club to think and act big.

From a modest 30,000 stadium United soon opened what was classed as the best stadium in the country at the time, one to house upwards of 60,000. A huge new stand was erected on the Barrack Road side of the ground and substantial terraces formed on the remaining three sides of the ground.

Also built was a vast swimming pool beneath the stand with player's facilities, a luxury touch the envy of every club in the Football League. The new stadium was opened in September 1905 with pomp and ceremony. Tyneside at the time had a stadium to be proud of - however one that remained largely unaltered for the next 70 years as further development plans were constantly thwarted.

During the Twenties the club attempted to take development a stage further, putting plans together for covered accommodation on the open sides of the ground. Archibald Leitch, a distinguished football ground architect who built, among others, Stamford Bridge, was employed to produce a scheme which included double-decker stands and complete cover around the ground.

However, after much wrangling between landlord and planners which lasted to 1930, all that was built was a modest cover over the Leazes End enclosure.

COMPLETE STORY

THE 21st century sees the Magpie's famous nest transformed into a towering structure housing 52,404 supporters with facilities the envy of most clubs in Europe.

In November 2011, Newcastle United announced plans to licence the full naming rights to the stadium, in order to generate additional commercial revenue from advertising and sponsorship.

And until a sponsor is found who will be granted full naming rights, the stadium was renamed the Sports Direct Arena.

Spoiler for Profile

Born: 18 July 1961, Wimbledon

Playing career: Whyteleafe, Epsom & Ewell, Corinthian Casuals, Dulwich Hamlet, Yeovil, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Tottenham Hotspur (loan), Barnet, Reading

Alan Pardew replaced Chris Hughton as Newcastle manager in December 2010 and made the best possible start, as United beat Liverpool 3-1 at home in his first game in charge.

Having started out in non-league, Pardew moved to Crystal Palace in 1987 and played well over 100 league games there, as well as playing in an FA Cup final. He moved onto Charlton and had a loan spell at Spurs, before ending his career with Barnet and Reading.

The latter was where his managerial career began, and after guiding The Royals to promotion into Division One and narrowly missing out on the Premier League via the play-offs, he was appointed manager of West Ham. He led them into the top flight and took them to within a whisker of winning the 2006 FA Cup final, before Liverpool prevailed on penalties following an epic match.

His career took him onto Charlton and Southampton before The Magpies came calling, and he signed a five-year contract at St. James' Park.

[CENTER]Newcastle United can today announce the signing of midfielder Romain Amalfitano.

The 22-year-old Frenchman will join the Club when his contract at Reims expires on Saturday, 30th June. He will officially become a Newcastle player on Sunday, 1st July.

Born in Nice, Amalfitano is a versatile midfielder who is equally comfortable operating on either the right flank or in a central role.

He came through the youth system at Châteauroux before starting his senior career with Evian.

From there, Amalfitano joined Reims in 2010, and has played at the Stade Auguste Delaune for the past two seasons, helping them achieve promotion back to Ligue 1 last season.

Amalfitano, whose older brother Morgan plays for Marseille, said: "I am very happy to be a Newcastle player.

"I have seen a bit of the city already and it is a change from France but one I am really looking forward to.

"When a club like Newcastle wants you to play for them it can only be a good thing. I have taken the opportunity to play in the Premier League and cannot wait to get going."

[CENTER]Newcastle United can today confirm the signing of Vurnon Anita from Ajax.

The 23-year-old Dutch international midfielder, who can also play as a full-back, has put pen to paper on a five-year-deal at the Sports Direct Arena, and will wear the number eight shirt.

Anita joined the renowned Ajax youth set-up in 1999 and progressed through the ranks at the Amsterdam Arena before making his debut in March 2006.

His European debut arrived the following season and Anita went on to establish himself as a key member of Ajax's squad, as they won back-to-back Eredivisie titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Born on the island of Curaçao, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean Sea, Anita has been capped three times for Holland since his international bow in May 2010.

"We are delighted to secure the services of Vurnon," said United manager Alan Pardew.

"He is an exceptionally talented footballer with great technical ability, which is exactly what I'm looking at in a player. And, at 23-years-old, we hope his best years are at Newcastle.

"He has come through the Ajax youth system which is world renowned for bringing up players the right way, and I am sure he will fit seamlessly into the squad of players we have here.

"Vurnon has done his pre-season, and indeed already played one competitive game, so he's up to speed and ready to play when I need him."

Newcastle United have touched down in Athens ahead of Thursday night's Europa League fourth qualifying round tie against Atromitos.

Manager Alan Pardew has named a 19-man party for the first leg tie at the Peristeri Stadium (kick-off 8pm local time), including new signing Vurnon Anita and 17-year-old Adam Campbell.

Summer arrivals Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana are also involved and could make their competitive Magpies debuts, if selected.

As always, nufc.co.uk is the only place to come for in-depth coverage of the United, be it at home or abroad.

Club Reporters Anthony Marshall and Dan King will bring fans previews, live text updates, reports and reaction from the qualifier, with Club Photographer Ian Horrocks providing exclusive images all the way.

And Newcastle supporters should also stay tuned to nufcTV, as Video Reporter Rob Scanlon supplies the manager's pre-game press conference, post-match interviews and highlights exclusively for our subscribers.

Newcastle United squad in full :

Romain Amalfitano, Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana, Yohan Cabaye, Adam Campbell, Papiss Cisse, Dan Gosling, Jonas Gutierrez, Steve Harper, Tim Krul, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, James Perch, Davide Santon, Danny Simpson, James Tavernier, Ryan Taylor, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson
