LA Lakers 101, Utah Jazz 77

Spoiler for RECAP

Lakers roll to 10th straight win with big 4th

=STAPLES CENTER= Home of The L.A. LAKERS : I LOVE L.A.

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Pau Gasol(notes) and the Los Angeles Lakers politely declined full credit for what they did to the Utah Jazz in the fourth quarter of the defending champions’ 10th straight victory.

After all, holding an opponent to six points and two field goals in the final period of a formerly close game requires more than a little help from the flustered foes themselves.

Kobe Bryant(notes) scored 27 points, Gasol had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and the Lakers rolled off 19 consecutive points in the fourth quarter of their 13th straight win over the Jazz in Los Angeles, 101-77 Wednesday night.

Ron Artest(notes) scored 17 points for the Lakers, who improved to an NBA-best 17-3 by holding the Jazz to 2-for-18 shooting in a comically one-sided fourth quarter. After leading by just two points entering the final period, Los Angeles held the Jazz scoreless for more than six minutes while getting points from five players.

“I guess there’s a little bit of credit to ourselves, but they were really out of whack,” Gasol said. “They didn’t get the shots they got in the first three quarters. We got the momentum and just started putting plays together.”

Deron Williams(notes) scored 17 points for the Jazz, who couldn’t manage a field goal in the first 7:25 of the final period at Staples Center, where they haven’t beaten the Lakers since Jan. 1, 2006, counting six losses in the past two playoffs.

Williams’ jumper with 4:35 to play was the Jazz’s first field goal of the period, and they didn’t get another until C.J. Miles’(notes) basket in the final minute. Utah committed nine turnovers in the fourth quarter, while the Lakers made none.

Just how bad was it? On the 21st anniversary of Jerry Sloan’s first day as Utah’s head coach, he was more clinical than angry after the game—a sure sign of his greatest degree of disappointment.

“They came out and just destroyed us,” Sloan said. “We were hanging in the ballgame, but that just shows you what a great team they have. … We have to learn to stay within what we are trying to do. You can’t go out and play street basketball against this team. They will annihilate you.”

Los Angeles’ winning streak is its longest in a single season since winning 10 straight in February 2008.

Bryant played after skipping the morning shootaround, telling the Lakers he was shaken up after a home-invasion robbery occurred in his family’s gated community in Orange County last night, leading to a police standoff. Bryant then declined to speak to reporters after the game.

Andrew Bynum(notes) scored 14 points for Los Angeles, which forced two shot clock violations by the Jazz during that fourth quarter stretch while getting eight points from Jordan Farmar(notes), the inconsistent backup guard.

“That was an amazing quarter,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “We were able to apply some pressure, and they gave Deron a rest. They subsequently got tougher shots, 24-second violations, turnovers, and things happened for us. I think once that happened, it became like an avalanche.”

The Lakers are one game away from completing an undefeated six-game homestand, which concludes Friday with a visit from Minnesota. Los Angeles’ lofty record is little surprise after an exceptionally generous schedule featuring 17 of its first 21 games at home, but the Lakers are on the road for all but nine of the following next 28 games.

Most of the Lakers’ victories have been easy, with the notable exception of last Friday’s one-point win over Miami on Bryant’s self-acknowledged lucky 3-pointer at the buzzer. Jackson felt a few close games would help his team’s late-game execution later on, and they got another test of their tenacity against Utah—until the fourth quarter, that is.

“It’s frustrating. We were in a lot of ballgames (against the Lakers), and we were in the ballgame again here,” Williams said. “But they just have one big run where they go unconscious, and they did that again tonight. … When Kobe starts hitting shots and other guys start warming up, it’s tough to stop them. They’ve got a lot of weapons. It’s the only way to look at it. I mean, they’ve got five guys on their team that can score 40 points.”

Carlos Boozer(notes) had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Jazz, failing to score at least 21 points for the first time in nine games. Utah rebounded from a loss to lowly Minnesota with a win over San Antonio on Monday, but its fourth-quarter woes in Los Angeles led to just the Jazz’s third loss in 11 games.

Mehmet Okur(notes) and Miles scored 14 points apiece for Utah.

NOTES: The teams meet again on Saturday in Salt Lake City. … Longtime Lakers player and assistant coach Kurt Rambis will face the Lakers on Friday night for the first time since taking over the Timberwolves. … Denzel Washington, Jack Black, Emmanuelle Chriqui and poker players Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth were at courtside.

Spoiler for RECAP

Lakers win 11th straight, Bryant injures finger

=STAPLES CENTER= Home of The L.A. LAKERS : I LOVE L.A.

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Just about everything broke the Los Angeles Lakers’ way during the first quarter of the regular season—everything except that fractured finger on Kobe Bryant’s(notes) shooting hand.

Bryant scored 20 points despite wearing a splint on his index finger in the second half, and the Lakers wrapped up the generous portion of their schedule with their 11th straight victory, 104-92 over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.

Bryant hurt himself while reaching for a pass late in the first quarter, and he played through it briefly before leaving in the second quarter to get X-rays and a halftime splint. The break isn’t his first avulsion fracture, in which a small piece of bone tears away near a ligament or tendon.

Although Bryant believes he’ll be fine to play on the Lakers’ five-game road trip starting Saturday at Utah, his injury was the only real blemish on the final win in an outstanding start for the defending champions, who improved the NBA’s best record to 18-3 while finishing a cushy season-opening stretch with 17 of their first 21 games at home.

“It’s pretty painful,” Bryant said. “I just tried to play through it. … You just get used to it, that’s all. It’s just a different technique to shoot the ball with this,” indicating the soft-foam protection on his right index finger.

It’s too soon to tell how the injury will affect Bryant, who was dogged by a nagging pinky injury for most of the past two seasons. The NBA’s second-leading scorer appeared to play with relative ease after the injury, using his left hand more frequently in Los Angeles’ ninth straight victory over the Timberwolves.

“Kobe is so skillful that he’ll still find a way to control the game,” said Lamar Odom(notes), who scored 13 points. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out and shot the ball like his finger wasn’t hurt at all. He can just switch to the left hand and be ambidextrous. He’s that good. I’ve never seen him have trouble adjusting because of an injury.”

Indeed, Bryant took several shots and made several passes with his left hand, although that’s not unusual for the multitalented former MVP.

“It’s not something I can avoid,” Bryant said in comparing the injury with his pinky problems. “The other one was on the knuckle. This one is on the shooting finger.”

Pau Gasol(notes) had 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, while Ron Artest(notes) scored 16 points for Los Angeles, which hasn’t lost since Nov. 15.

The Lakers’ exceptionally kind early season schedule officially ended with their seventh consecutive home win over the Timberwolves and their first 11-game winning streak since late in the 2003-04 season. With more than 41 percent of their regular-season home schedule already finished, the Lakers are finally headed for their first games outside California since Nov. 13.

“There’s only one loss here or two I could say that I was disappointed in how we played the game,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “We did a good job on our home court and set ourselves up for the road schedule now.”

Al Jefferson(notes) had 24 points and 13 rebounds as Minnesota lost for the fifth time in six games to drop to 3-20 under rookie coach Kurt Rambis, who picked up last summer’s NBA championship ring from his longtime employers before the game.

Rambis received a warm ovation from the Staples Center crowd before the game. The longtime Lakers forward and assistant coach accepted the task of rebuilding the Timberwolves last summer, bringing the triangle offense to Minneapolis with little success so far.

“It’s enjoyable to get the ring,” Rambis said. “It’s very, very beautiful, very ornate, but I always like the boxes. The boxes are the neatest thing. The ring rotates, there’s a little light that shines down on it, it’s very nice. It’s going to have a fun time in my attic. We don’t keep them out, so it’s a mark of an accomplishment. It was an enjoyable season last year, and I was happy to be a part of it.”

Ramon Sessions(notes) scored 15 points for the Timberwolves, whose lively play couldn’t overcome 17 turnovers. Former UCLA star Kevin Love(notes) had an uneven debut in the starting lineup, matching his career high with 19 rebounds but managing just seven points on 3-of-14 shooting.

“We work hard every day to get where Kurt got last year, but it’s going to take some time,” Jefferson said. “It was a great experience, because they’re running the same offense we run, but of course, we can learn a lot more.”

Minnesota made an impressive run during Bryant’s second-quarter absence, with Sessions making six consecutive shots to keep Los Angeles’ halftime lead to two points. Bryant hit a 3-pointer and two more baskets in the opening minutes of the second half, propelling the Lakers back ahead.

Los Angeles then scored the final 12 points of the third quarter to take an 86-68 lead. Bryant stayed in the game until midway through the fourth quarter.

NOTES: The Lakers still haven’t lost since Gasol’s return from injury, going 10-0. … Longtime Utah Jazz broadcaster Hot Rod Hundley joined the Lakers’ television team for the first of six games filling in for regular color commentator Stu Lantz. … Rambis played nine seasons for the Lakers, winning four titles, before winning two more rings during seven seasons this decade as an assistant coach.

LA Lakers 96, Chicago Bulls 87

Spoiler for RECAP

Bryant scores 42, Lakers beat Bulls 96-87

=STAPLES CENTER= Home of The L.A. LAKERS : I LOVE L.A.

CHICAGO (AP)—Kobe Bryant(notes) scored a season-high 42 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers won for the 12th time in 13 games, beating the fading Chicago Bulls 96-87 on Tuesday.

Down one through three quarters, the Lakers pulled away early in the fourth and sent Chicago to its 11th loss in 13 games.

Bryant was simply phenomenal even though he was wearing a splint on his broken right index finger, tearing through the Bulls after struggling to score 16 in a loss to Utah on Saturday. He needed IV fluids in that game because of a stomach ailment but had no trouble this time.

Andrew Bynum(notes) added 11 points, Pau Gasol(notes) grabbed 16 rebounds for Los Angeles.

Luol Deng(notes) scored 21 for Chicago and so did Derrick Rose(notes) even though he strained a left rib in the first quarter.
