Murderland

1 - 3 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

The new series from Image about a lady assassin who dresses up in disguise to kill her targets that set off a furious debate on sequential detail and clarity versus non-linearity and deliberate ambiguity in comic book storylines among comic book forums and blogs. And how about the strangely angular artwork? Suffice it to say that the first three issues may not be enough to put together all the disjointed parts and pieces that keep cropping up everywhere. But you know what? For me it's a welcome break as I've had quite enough of that more-of-the-same literal drivel that Marvel mostly dishes out week after week.
All high quality scans by the one and only Minutemen-DTs.

Billy The Kid's Old Timey Oddities
And the Ghastly Fiend of London

1 - 4 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

From the Eisner award-winning creator of The Goon comes an over-the-bigtop horror romp pitting outlaw legend Billy the Kid and a band of circus "freaks" against the evil machinations of the nefarious Dr. Frankenstein!

Penned with deranged glee by Powell and illustrated by fan-favorite horror artist Kyle Hotz (The Agency andThe Hood), Billy The Kid's Old Timey Oddities starts with Billy the Kid free to roam America, having faked his own death. Free, that is, until Fineas Spoule, AKA. The Human Spider, discovers his secret. Now, afraid of being exposed, Billy finds himself in the service of a caravan of carnival sideshow performers who have unfinished business with a mad scientist none other than Victor Frankenstein himself!

This twisted love child of spaghetti westerns and Hammer horror flicks combines Powell's humorous fast-paced storytelling and Hotz's quirky macabre visuals for a story that the whole family will love...if they're the kind of family that love alligator men and miniature boys fighting monstrous mistakes of science with the help of the fastest gunslinger in the West!

Written by Eric Powell creator The Goon, recipient of the International Horror Guild Award and multiple Eisner Awards!

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Vol. 1

1 - 6 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

Proving that mainstream comics could be infused with past literary/cultural ideals and still be bestsellers, the America's Best Comics imprint took the dilapidated superhero genre and created three vastly entertaining hybrids with Tom Strong, Promethea and Top Ten. Now, a stunning coup de grace is delivered with this masterful pairing of Victorian adventure fiction's greatest characters and the old war-horse of the super-group. With the stunning The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, it would be no exaggeration to say that Alan Moore has produced a near-perfect piece of adventure fiction that is clever, literate, rich with excitement and hard to put down.

It's 1898 and at the behest of M, the mysterious head of the secret Service, Campion Bond is dispatched to procure the services of Miss Mina Murray (nee Harker), adventurer Allan Quartermain, "Science-Pirate" Captain Nemo, Henry Jekyll (and his monstrous alter ego) and Hawley Griffin (a.k.a. the Invisible Man). Together, they must combat an insidious threat that will decide supremacy of the London skies, but their success may unleash a far greater threat. With no shortage of action, Moore and O' Neill sustain a high level of suspense, intrigue, mystery and terrific wit that all contribute to an indispensable read. O'Neill's art, so memorable in Marshal Law, produces a London filled with vivid, magnificent architecture and a malevolent atmosphere ripe with thrills and danger. An unmitigated triumph--pure and simple.

Absolution

1 - 6 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

In real-life police departments, officers who work in Special Victims Units must rotate out, or otherwise they become affected by the horrible things they see in the course of their jobs. Absolution explores the idea that if police departments employed superhumans, what if they were rare enough that they were the only ones who could do their job, and stayed in that capacity for too long, becoming mentally and emotionally destabilized.

John Dusk, superhero, with powers similar to Green Lantern's, goes over the edge after one too many horrible sights, and begins to murder those he believes do not deserve to be alive because of the magnitude of their crimes, and his belief that the "revolving door" will just put them back on the street again.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Vol. 2

1 - 6 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

Moore continues his trip through pulp genres with this second volume of The League. This collection includes plenty of faux-Victorian backup material, including the comic book series' original covers, and a lengthy prose short story by Moore. Although the film version was a bust, the source material remains an enjoyable, beautifully executed adventure series. Set in an alternate, technologically advanced 1898 London, the story finds legendary literary heroes Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Hawley Griffin (the Invisible Man), Edward Hyde and Mina Murray fighting battles that the British Empire can't handle without them. Here, the eclectic team is defending Earth from a Martian invasion, partially set in motion by another pulp hero, Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter of Mars. Moore spares no opportunity to play up the team's origins. Edward Hyde, the monstrous side of Dr. Jekyll, is a nasty brute, while Nemo is an imperious egomaniac, and the once-dashing Allan Quartermain is in the twilight of his powers, yet manages to romance Mina Murray, of Dracula notoriety.
Moore remains faithful to the stories' structures (e.g., the Martian invasion is a pulpy romp, complete with burning farm houses, silly-looking creatures and plenty of political intrigue). O'Neill, his artistic collaborator, continues his fine run on the series. His drawings are influenced by 19th-century woodcuts but remain loose and lively. His exquisite renderings of machines and urban landscape remain a reason to look at this series—rarely has an adventure comic been so much fun to observe.

Sweets

1 - 5 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

Probably the best miniseries nobody is reading. Sweets is a beautifully written and drawn creator-owned title from Kody Chamberlain and it’s a book that anyone with a love of crime/thriller stories, or just an appreciation for the comic medium as an art-form, should be reading. An imaginative take that's a showcase of crime fiction at its very best.

A spree killer terrorizes New Orleans days before Hurricane Katrina makes landfall. Detective Curt Delatte just buried his only daughter, and he’s in no condition to work. But when the bodies pile up, he masks his grief and joins the hunt through the bowels of the Big Easy. It won’t be long until his city—and his evidence—gets washed away. CHAMBERLAIN, a native of southern Louisiana, makes his writing debut with this dark and gritty miniseries. -- issue #1 solicitation, imagecomics.com

A strange series of events in the spree killer case drives a wedge between Detective Curt Delatte and the only thing he's ever been good at—his job. -- issue #4 solicitation, imagecomics.com

Twilight Guardian

1 - 5 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

TWILIGHT GUARDIAN does what so few miniseries do these days…it ends well. It nicely closes the door on this story, while leaving plenty of unlocked windows for possible returns. In other words, you get a satisfying ending for now, that still leaves room for a new series, but not in the usual open-ended, set you up to buy the next thing kind of way.
Hickman is unafraid of defying convention. He makes “small” moments have a “big” impact. No flash or pomp, no giant battles and exaggerated poses, TWILIGHT GUARDIAN remains a 50/50 blend of super-hero tropes as strained through a slice-of-life colander. Everything from Pam’s reunion with her dad, one last comic-within-a-comic, and her absolutely perfect confrontation with the DUSK DEVIL delivers on a multitude of levels. These are thinking comics, not action comics…and not in that contrived, look-who-clever-I,-the-writer-am fashion we so often see.

Gravel

0 - 5 complete (engl.)

painjesters selected comics

Gravel, also known as Sergeant Major William Gravel is a British SAS soldier and one of the best at that. Due to some shady activity though (namely, taking numerous unsanctioned jobs for cash) he has earned the punishment of working as a "K" agent on deniable operations. He could leave if he wanted to but he knows that would only lead to the British government trying to kill him, so he does his job, but not happily. He serves as a constant annoyance to his superior officers which leads to them putting him on more and more dangerous missions. He also continues to take black market jobs not only to make money, but to buy friends and favors for when the day comes that his people start coming for him. Aside from his military involvement, William Gravel is best known for being a combat magician. At one point in time he was one of 8, but presently, he is the only one around. Not much is known about the magical side of Gravel's past other than that he's been a practicing combat magician for about 20 years.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Vol. 3

Oneshot

painjesters selected comics

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill, published beginning in 1999. The series spans two six-issue limited series and a graphic novel from the America's Best Comics imprint of Wildstorm/DC, and a third miniseries published by Top Shelf and Knockabout Comics. According to Moore, the concept behind the series was initially a "Justice League of Victorian England" but quickly grew into an opportunity to merge all works of fiction into one world.
Says Moore: "The planet of the imagination is as old as we are. It has been humanity's constant companion with all of its fictional locations, like Mount Olympus and the gods, and since we first came down from the trees, basically. It seems very important, otherwise, we wouldn't have it. Moore and O'Neill have stated that they plan to map out many different eras in the League series with Allan Quatermain and Mina Murray being the two constants.
