WSBK » Biaggi: I must like a difficult challenge…
S3< World Superbike Community 2011 >S3 - Part 2
Max Biaggi toasts his second World Superbike Championship success after holding his nerve to prevail in the series' tightest ever title battle.

Max Biaggi says the dramatic circumstances that led to him winning the 2012 World Superbike Championship by the slenderest of margins makes his sixth world title taste all the 'sweeter'.

A season of high-drama from start-to-finish, though Biaggi has never strayed outside the top two throughout this year's title battle, the rapid ascension of Tom Sykes in the run up to the final round at Magny-Cours set the stage for an exciting last round showdown.

As it happens, few could have predicted just how tense the final round would be, Biaggi's crash in the first race and Sykes's third place finish seeing the Kawasaki man move to within 14.5 points with just 23 laps to decide the outcome.

With Sykes doing his utmost out front to score the win he required to keep the pressure on Biaggi, the Italian held his nerve to sneak the fifth place finish he needed to secure the title by a mere 0.5 points.

His second WSBK title, and sixth world championship success, 41-year-old Biaggi was beside himself with delight after a season that saw him adopt a fairly conservative approach to his racing, one that arguably led to him scoring the half point he needed to keep Sykes at bay.

“This is the fourth world championship out of six that I've won in the last race,” Biaggi, who won five races on the way to the title, said. “I guess I must like a difficult challenge! The 2012 season was tight to say the least: we started off well winning at Phillip Island after completely revamping my team, but we also had some difficult moments. We definitely worked for the title and maybe that's why it's an even sweeter victory.

“I'd like to thank the Team, Aprilia and Piaggio Group, from president Colaninno to the last worker because my success is just the tip of a great Italian company's work. I would also like to thank my family, my girlfriend Eleonora and my two children, as well as the always present Marino Laghi.”

Also helping Aprilia secure a second manufacturers' crown, Biaggi's plans for the 2013 season remain unconfirmed, with rumours split between him staying on for another year and retiring on a high.

The closest ever finish in the history of the Superbike World Championship took place at Magny-Cours today when Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) finished the race fifth and in doing so he ended up the season 0.5 points ahead of Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team).

Sykes did all he could in winning race two, while Biaggi did just enough by finishing fifth, the final points reading Biaggi 358 and Sykes 357.5. Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) was second in the 23-lap race, with Sylvain Guintoli (PATA Racing Team Ducati) third.

Biaggi's team-mate, Eugene Laverty was fourth in the race, but the other championship hopeful Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) crashed out of contention. He finished third in the points in any case, on 328.5. This was Biaggi's second Superbike World Championship success, having won the title with Aprilia in 2010.

WSBK » 2012 eni WSBK Championship standings
S3< World Superbike Community 2011 >S3 - Part 2
Max Biaggi emerges on top of the closest and most keenly fought World Superbike Championship fight in the history of the series...

The World Superbike Championship has come down to some nail-biting conclusions in its 25 years, but the 2012 World Superbike Championship is destined to be remembered as the closest and most keenly contested of all time.

In a year that saw nine different race winners – the highest number since 2001 – and five different manufacturers represented inside the top five, it was fitting that the title would be decided by a mere half-point.

For Tom Sykes, to lose by such a margin is cruel, not least because it comes in a year that has seen both rider and Kawasaki come of age after several seasons in the doldrums. After four wins, nine pole positions and second in the standings, it's hard to believe that no-one gave Sykes a fighting chance pre-season…

But circumstances conspired against Sykes and despite a charge in the final two events, it is Max Biaggi that comes away as the title winner for the second time in three years. Though his tally of five wins is the least achieved by a title winner since 2002, it is testament to both his consistency and the closeness of the series in general that he was still able to secure the title.

Behind them, there were few changes down the order after the final two races, Marco Melandri settling for third in what remains BMW's best-ever season, while Carlos Checa and Jonathan Rea fly the flag for Ducati and Honda in fourth and fifth.

Despite ending his season with a different team to the one he started with, Sylvain Guintoli's third win of the year sees him leapfrog Leon Haslam for seventh in the standings, the Frenchman notching up a third consecutive top seven finish overall.

ParkinGO MTC Aprilia rider Chaz Davies secures 'rookie' honours in ninth place at the end of a season that has seen him achieve super highs, but experience the occasional low, while Davide Giugliano squeezed back ahead of Michel Fabrizio to finish his first WSBK season in tenth place.

In all, the season began with 24 full-time riders (but fluctuated between 21 and 23 for much of the year), saw nine different winners from five different manufacturers, 15 different podium winners and 34 point scorers.

And yet, after 28 races and eight months, it would still only come down to just half a point…

WSBK » Aprilia regains WSBK manufacturers' title
S3< World Superbike Community 2011 >S3 - Part 2
Wins from Max Biaggi, Eugene Laverty and Chaz Davies propel Aprilia towards the 2012 World Superbike Manufacturers' Championship title.

As well as celebrating Max Biaggi's success in the World Superbike Championship riders' standings, Aprilia as a whole team have further reason to be pleased after the Italian marque secured its second manufacturers' crown.

Two years after reaping the rewards of Biaggi's dominant turn in 2010, Aprilia have triumphed once again in 2012 thanks to wins achieved by each of its three representatives on the grid.

Indeed, as well as Biaggi's five victories, Eugene Laverty's win at Portimao and Chaz Davies's success at the Nurburgring proved pivotal in Aprilia edging ahead of season-long rivals BMW.

BMW had looked on course for a run at the title following Marco Melandri's strong run of summer form, but struggles at the Nurburgring and Portimao allowed Aprilia to regain the initiative and secure the championship by a fairly comfortable 17.5 points.

“Winning is always something extraordinary, but winning a world championship this way, at the last turn of the last race, makes it incredibly exciting,” said Aprilia sporting director Gigi Dall'Igna. “Credit to Max who battled on every circuit, always earning important points and bringing home fantastic victories which led us to this double victory today.

“Aprilia's victory in the Manufacturer World Championship, thanks also to Laverty, is a reward for a great Group and a Racing Division which are the pride of Italian technology. Applause also goes to our rivals, never before so many and strong enough to make the outcome of this championship uncertain and unforgettable down to the last moment.”
