PERSON OF INTEREST stars Jim Caviezel, Emmy Award winner Michael Emerson and Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson in a crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent who teams up with a mysterious billionaire to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice. Reese's (Caviezel) special training in covert operations appeals to Finch (Emerson), a software genius who invented a program that uses pattern recognition to identify people about to be involved in violent crimes. Using state-of-the-art surveillance technology, the two work outside of the law using Reese's adept skills and Finch's unlimited wealth to unravel the mystery of the person of interest and stop the crime before it happens. Reese's actions catch the attention of the NYPD, including homicide detective Carter (Henson), and Fusco (Kevin Chapman), a cop who Reese uses to his advantage. With infinite crimes to investigate, Reese and Finch find that the right person, with the right information, at the right time, can change everything. Emmy Award winners J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk ("Lost"), Academy Award nominee Jonathan Nolan ("Memento"), David Semel ("Heroes") and Greg Plageman ("Cold Case") are the executive producers for Warner Bros. Television.

Comic-Con 2011: 'Person of Interest' EPs Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman on Stormtroopers and Spandex (Q&A)

Quote:
THR: What’s your favorite Comic-Con memory?
Nolan: We were there for the Dark Knight gag and since we weren’t there officially my brother Chris told me I had to go dressed in disguise. I explained that no one was going to recognize me because I’m a writer. I was instructed to go dressed as a Stormtrooper, so I went down wearing a Stormtrooper helmet.
THR: How long did you last in it?
Nolan: (Laughing) Not very long! They gave us badges that had code names on them. Between the Stormtrooper helmet and the badge, we managed to get out of their alive. Because all of the fans got together for the viral gag were dressing up as the Joker with facepaint, we just blended in with them and got our faces painted – I ditched my Stormtrooper mask and painted my face up as the Joker and went running around the streets of San Diego with a few other kids for a few hours. It was great fun.
Comic-Con 2011: Full THR Coverage
THR: What panel would you stand in line all day to see?
Nolan: My wife, [Burn Notice writer] Lisa Joy will be there with her indie comic, Headache, that she put out this year. I’d stand in line for that.
Plageman: Game of Thrones.
THR: Who would be on your dream panel?
Plageman: Chris Carter.
THR: What tips do you have for Comic-Con first-timers?
Nolan: Spandex -- don’t do it. And take the train.
THR: If you could work on any other show, what would it be and what would you do?
Plageman: I’d love to work on Rescue Me, Californication or Boardwalk Empire.
Nolan: I like Game of Thrones but I could do with less of the adolescent kids sucking boobs. That threw me for a loop. The whole breast-feeding 12-year-old boy thing – if there were a TiVo button to skip that stuff, it’d be great.
THR: What can we expect from Person of Interest panel?
Nolan: We reveal all the secrets of the show in coded form. (Laughs.) We’ll screen the pilot and we’re excited to see what the Comic-Con audience thinks of it.

Comic-Con 2011: 'Person of Interest's' Michael Emerson (Q&A)
Quote:
THR: What’s one thing that stands out from your first Comic-Con?
Emerson: All I can remember is a horde of people in costumes and it being more chaotic than any place I had ever been. I would love to go to Comic-Con 12 years ago when I wasn't on TV and could just walk around and buy comic books. I used to be a magazine illustrator and I'm really interested in the art of graphic novels and comic books, but I can’t walk the floor of that convention now.
THR: If you were to attend in costume, what would it be?
Emerson: It would probably be something bought at the last minute, like a dime-store rubber clown mask that covers your whole head.
Comic-Con 2011: Full THR Coverage
THR: If you could create a dream panel, who would be on it?
Emerson: I would like to attend a panel that included the creators of the original Prisoner and the BBC Prisoner that aired last year. I'd like to hear them talk about the differences in those two projects because that was the greatest sci-fi work of my childhood.
THR: Would you stand in line all day for that?
Emerson: Hell yeah.
THR: What are you most looking forward to this year?
Emerson: I feel like Person of Interest doesn't exactly fit the definition of the shows that should be there. I mean, I think they think we're science fiction; but I think we're actually science fact because all that high-tech stuff on our show that seems extraordinary already exists.

Fall TV First Impression: Person of Interest, By the Numbers
Quote:
THE SHOW | CBS’ Person of Interest (Thursdays at 9/8c, premiering Sept. 22)
THE COMPETITION | ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Fox’s Bones, NBC’s The Office/Whitney (new), and The CW’s The Secret Circle (new)
THE CAST | Michael Emerson (Lost), Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ), Taraji P. Henson (Boston Legal) and Kevin Chapman (Brotherhood)

THE SET-UP | Caviezel plays John Reese, a presumed-dead ex-CIA agent/Special Forces operative who is living under the radar (and beneath a homeless man’s beard) when he is recruited by the mysterious Mr. Finch (Emerson) to help stop crimes before they happen. In the vein of Minority Report (though minus the precogs dipped in goo), Finch has access to a machine that routinely spits out the Social Security number of someone who is about to commit a violent crime or be the victim — there’s no telling which. Finch has the wealth and resources to act on these tips, while tough guy Reese has the know-how. Making vigilantism A-OK: Finch isn’t a fan of guns, so Reese shoots a lot of punks in the leg.

THE GOOD | Let’s start with the pedigree: J.J. Abrams (Fringe) is among the executive producers, as is Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight), who also penned the pilot. As for the cast: When the going gets tough — and in the pilot, that is often — Caviezel gets the “steely action hero” job done, delivering an odd hybrid of Clint Eastwood and Eric Roberts. Emerson is appropriately enigmatic, parsing out cryptic bits in a way that would drive John Locke bonkers. (“[The Machine] wouldn’t be steering us toward her if it wasn’t seeing something.”) Henson is solid in her only big scene, confronting Reese about his mad hand-to-hand combat skillz. Some of the espionage tech that is employed (e.g. a gizmo that turns a target’s cell phone into a 24/7 microphone) is nifty, and presumably (?) fictional. New York City, versus some Vancouver poser, shows well.

THE… COULD-BE-BETTER | I had an interesting experience with this pilot. Upon my first viewing, I thought, ‘OK, this is curious enough, and the action scenes are very well-done. Let the nitpickers fret over the shaky science behind Finch’s ‘Machine.’ I’m buckling in for the ride.” Then, as I rewatched it… the Machine began to bug me a bit. Because really, what combination of Visa Card purchases, Lincoln Tunnel toll booth swipes and eavesdropped phone calls is going to flag me as a future crime target? (At least the gooey precogs were, you know, precogs.) So while I’m set to tune in, I’m torn as to whether Person of Interest should delve deeper into the Machine’s machinery or never speak of it again.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE | CBS is betting big on this Person, deeming it worthy to claim the relocated CSI‘s old time slot and take some shots at seven-year-old Grey’s, an in-transition Office, and what portends to be a strong if intermittent season of Bones. (Of note, the network told reporters that the pilot scored the highest marks from test audiences since Chicago Hope circa 1994.) Definitely one of those shows I’ll need to see another episode or two to fully assay.

Fall TV Mystery Solved! Person of Interest Will Explain How Its Crime-Predicting Gizmo Works

As technologically suspect as the crime-predicting “machine” at the heart of Person of Interest may seem, CBS’ new action-drama does plan to slowly — in keeping with the style of exec producer J.J. Abrams — shed light on how the contraption works.

“I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed,” executive producer Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight) told me at the Television Critics Association press tour, upon hearing my thought that maybe the seemingly unbelievable machine’s workings should never be referenced beyond the pilot. “Following the J.J. rules, we’ll do it one piece at a time.”

Nolan went on to say that because he, personally, is “so interested in the machine, in its inception, in how [Mr. Finch, the character played by Lost alum Michael Emerson] put it together … we’re pushing ahead and exploring a bit more of that. It gets to some of the questions of the show that I’m fascinated by.”

As established in the series’ pilot (airing Thursday, Sept. 22, at 9/8c), Finch recruits an ex-CIA spook (played by Jim Caviezel) to use his mad skills to attempt to prevent crimes, based on the lone piece of data churned out by the machine — the Social Security number of either the incident’s victim or perpetrator. As revealed by Finch in the opener, the machine — developed in the wake of 9/11 — sifts through eavesdropped phone conversations, emails and what not to predict which individual might be in harm’s way… or exacting said harm.

If Finch’s machine sounds far out, Nolan cautions that given today’s technology, “The hardware is very much in place. Everyone has a device in their pocket which the police now use, more than anything else, to determine what happened when something goes wrong — your cell phone.” In fact, as demonstrated somewhat remarkable in the POI pilot, Nolan claims that a person’s cell “is a live microphone for the government should they choose to turn it on, it’s a location tracker… We’re standing on this precipice of seeing what happens when you start harnessing all that information. Which is why [Person of Interest] is not really a science fiction show; it’s more science fact.”

Nolan, though, was quick to add on this one caveat — that any exploration of the machine’s complex workings will “not be to the exclusion of kickass explosions and amazing, soulful relationships and character moments.”
