Jemm son of Saturn
Jemm son of Saturn

Jemm is a fictional alien that has appeared in various comic book series published by DC Comics. The character exists in DC’s main shared universe, known as the DC Universe. Created by Greg Potter and Gene Colan originally as the green-skinned cousin of the Martian Manhunter (his original name was Jemm, Son of Mars), he first appeared in Jemm, Son of Saturn #1 (September 1984).

Jemm is superstrong, and has the power of flight. He is also a telepath. He possesses the ability to fire psychokinetic energy discharges from the organic gemstone in his forehead. The gemstone is known as the Mark of Jargon. Jargon the Mighty is alleged to have brokered peace between the red and white races.
Unlike Green Martians, Red Saturnians like Jemm cannot shapeshift, but they are capable of rapid cellular regeneration. Koolars a subset of the White Saturnians are capable of shapeshifting like Martians. Koolars have also demonstrated the power to meld with inanimate matter.
Like Martians, all Saturnians are psychologically vulnerable to fire.

Intimates (wilstorm)
The Intimates was a twelve-issue American comic book limited series, written by Joe Casey and published by DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint. The series were created by Joe Casey, Jim Lee and Giuseppe Camuncoli.

The Intimates followed the lives of superpowered teenagers and their lives in a school for superheroes. It focused on the characters behind the superpowers and their lives rather than missions or action-oriented conflicts seen in most superhero comics.

The series was known for its “information overload” storytelling style, with “pop-up” panels and “info scrolls” at the bottom of each page, providing small facts about the events taking place, such as glimpses into a character’s history or random “facts.” One issue featured a fake ad for the food given away at the Seminary, “chemically treated to calm ALL overactive behavior!”

Inferior Five
The Inferior Five (or I5) are a parody superhero team that premiered in the DC Comics title Showcase #62 (1966). Created by E. Nelson Bridwell (writer) and Joe Orlando and Mike Esposito (artists), the group was intended as a parody not only of the Fantastic Four, but of all the superhero teams whose members had such great powers that they could have solved any of the crimes put before them singlehandedly. The Five had to work as a team; none of them could have fought crime on their own.

All the characters were sons or daughters of members of a superhero team called the Freedom Brigade, a parody of the Justice League of America, and most of the Inferior Five were takeoffs of other popular DC characters, while Merryman’s appearance was specifically modeled on Woody Allen.

After appearing in Showcase #62, 63, and 65 (1966), they got their own title which lasted twelve issues. The first ten had new material and were published from 1967-68. In one memorable adventure, they met a group of what appeared to be Marvel superheroes, slightly changed to avoid copyright problems, and fought alongside them to repel an invasion of aliens with hypnotic eyes and garlic breath.

Issues #11 and 12 were published in 1972, and titled Inferior 5 (using the number 5 rather than spelling out the word) and were all reprints, except for new covers. Nothing changed with the alteration of the title. Afterwards they appeared sporadically after their own series was canceled, most notably in Showcase #100, one or two panels in Crisis on Infinite Earths, The Oz-Wonderland War #3 (March 1986), in a superhero limbo in the Grant Morrison written Animal Man series. They appear in one panel in JLA: Another Nail as Flash and the Atom take a trip through many dimensions.

Although the Inferior Five’s original stories made frequent references to other prominent DC heroes, The Oz-Wonderland War #3 revealed their adventures to have actually occurred on “Earth-Twelve,” which thus had its own doppelgangers of the JLA, the Teen Titans, etc., meaning that any such references were out of continuity in relation to the heroes of DC’s primary Earth-One.

Hourman
Hourman (spelled Hour-Man in his earliest appearances, also referred to as the Hour-Man, and the Hourman) is the name of three different fictional DC Comics superheroes the first of whom was created by Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily in Adventure Comics #48 (April 1940), during the Golden Age of Comic Books.

Neither Rex nor Rick have any innate powers (though it was theorized once that their powers derive from a metagene, like most DC superheroes). Any superhuman abilities they display are derived from the use of Miraclo. Taking the drug grants a user several abilities for the span of an hour. Most obvious are the superhuman strength, durability, increased resistance to physical damage (to the extent of being impervious to small arms fire) and speed enhancements. Other, lesser known and mentioned powers include night vision and the ability to survive underwater. Rex and Rick both took Miraclo in pill form, but Rick currently uses a transdermal patch.

Fanboy
Fanboy is the title of a six issue comic book miniseries by Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragonés which was published by DC Comics in 1999.

Fanboy is the story of Finster, a rabid comic book fan and comic book store employee who dreams of becoming a professional comic book artist. Finster’s daydreams are of classic comic book heroes, with himself inserted as a sidekick. While Finster’s every day activities are illustrated by Aragonés, his day dreams are illustrated by Jerry Ordway, Frank Miller, Gil Kane, Neal Adams, Dick Sprang, Bill Sienkiewicz, Brent Anderson, Russ Heath, Joe Kubert, Marie Severin, Brian Bolland, Jim Mooney, Joe Giella, Bruce Timm, Kevin Nowlan, Wendy Pini, Jordi Bernet, Phil Jiminez, Bernie Wrightson, Matt Haley, Tom Simmons, Will Blyberg, Dave Gibbons, Steve Rude, Dick Giordano, Mike Grell and Dan Spiegle. The covers also featured Finster added into homages to classic comic book covers.

Finster, the protagonist, is a teenager, who works in a comic shop, while also being an artist. He daydreams about, and has had real, adventures. He usually mixes his own life with Fantasy, and is always talking to the reader.

The original six issue mini-series was published by DC Comics from March to August 1999. The series was a collected into a trade paperback first published in 2001 (ISBN 1563897245).

The L.A.W.
The L.A.W. (Living Assault Weapons) was a six-issue American comic book limited series, published by DC Comics.

The starring team “The L.A.W.” consisted of Charlton Comics characters Blue Beetle, The Question, Judomaster, Captain Atom, The Peacemaker, Nightshade, and Sarge Steel. The first issue marked the first appearance of Mitchell Black as The Peacemaker as well as the first appearance of super-villain Avatar.

The L.A.W. (Living Assault Weapons #1 debuted in September 1999, and was writtern and inked by Bob Layton with pencils by Dick Giordano. The series logo on each of the six covers spotlighted one specific member of The L.A.W., with the first issue highlighting “Blue Beetle”. Subsequent issues were emblazoned with the names of (in order): The Question, The Peacemaker, Nightshade, Judomaster and Captain Atom. The six covers incorporated a foreground illustration of the named character, over a background image of the entire team which formed a continuous image when all six issues were placed in line.

The series ran monthly until February 2000, and was one of three projects by Layton and Giordano (who were soon to announce the formation of their own, with David Michelinie, Future Comics publisher) for DC in the same time period, alongside two Batman Elseworlds tales.

Congo Bill
Congo Bill was a long running DC Comics adventure comic strip, first published in More Fun Comics #56 (June 1940), created by Whitney Ellsworth and George Papp. The strip ran in various DC Comics titles until Action Comics #248 (January 1959), when Congo Bill was transformed into Congorilla, which ran until April 1961. Congorilla was created by Robert Bernstein and Howard Sherman.

The Congo Bill strip was a standard jungle adventure strip, reminiscent of Alex Raymond’s Jungle Jim newspaper strip. The strip was a moderate success and switched from More Fun to Action Comics with issue #37, where it stayed until issue #248 when it was transformed into Congorilla.

In Action Comics #228, Congo Bill meets a strange golden gorilla, much more intelligent than normal gorillas. Twenty issues later, Bill’s friend, the witch doctor Chief Kawolo, tells him that he can control the gorilla by way of a mysterious ring, which allows him to change minds with the gorilla. Shortly after Kawolo tells Congo Bill this, he dies. Bill is later trapped in a cave and uses the ring to switch minds with the gorilla. Bill decides to use new power to fight crime in the jungle. He is assisted by Janu, a young boy raised in the jungle.

The Congorilla series ran in Action Comics until issue 262, after which it was transferred to Adventure Comics, where it ran until issue 283. Since the demise of its own series, Congorilla has mainly been seen as a guest star in other titles, including as part of the Forgotten Heroes. The character finally received a mini-series of his own in 1994, where Congo Bill is betrayed by his (now corrupt) ward Janu, who usurps the Congorilla identity and Bill is forced to fight his adopted son to the death. In 1999, DC Comics once again brought Congo Bill back for another four-issue limited series under the company’s mature readership Vertigo imprint.

In March 2008, it was announced that Congorilla will return as a member of a spin-off faction of the Justice League.
