Japan’s hard-line military junta will do anything to stop him and they have found the ultimate pawn to set their plan in motion: Renjiro, the chief advisor to the notorious gangster. New Gods
The New Gods are a fictional race appearing in publications by DC Comics, as well as the title for four series of comics about those characters. They first appeared in New Gods #1 (February 1971), and were created by Jack Kirby.

The beings of New Genesis and Apokolips call themselves gods and live outside of normal time and space in a realm called the Fourth World. These New Gods have evolved due to their close proximity to the Source, a primeval energy, believed to be one of the ultimate foundations of the Universal Expression of Energy, along with their superior technology, into beings of genetic stability and evolutionary perfection. The denizens of New Genesis and Apokolips are immortal, stronger, faster, and smarter than Homo sapiens, despite their resemblance.

The New Gods are vulnerable to a substance called Radion. Its source is unknown and its effects are toxic only in sustained amounts or after explosive exposure. The average New God can be slain by an application of Radion from a Radion blaster or bomb.

Writer Peter David introduced the idea that the New Gods were giants and that the Boom Tube would shrink them as they traveled to normal time and space or enlarge beings who traveled to the Fourth World realm. For example, if Superman were to travel to Apokolips under his own power, he would be miniature in comparison to the New Gods.

Mister Miracle
Mister Miracle (Scott Free) is a fictional superhero published by DC Comics. He first appeared in Mister Miracle #1 (April 1971) and was created by Jack Kirby.

Mister Miracle was one of four series in Kirby’s ambitious but short-lived Fourth World saga. The character was inspired by the early illusionist career of comic book artist Jim Steranko, while the character’s relationship with Big Barda is based on Kirby’s relationship with his own wife.

Mek
Mek is a three-issue comic book mini-series published in 2003 by WildStorm, written by Warren Ellis, pencilled by Steve Rolston and inked by Al Gordon.

The story is set in the near future, when the old fashioned styles of body modification have become passe. The newest fad, “MEK” (short for Massive Enhancement Culture), involves adding cybernetic implants, such as cell phones implanted directly into the skull. The founder of the MEK movement is Sarissa Leon, who has become a celebrity of the new fad. She returns to Sky Road, the place where MEK first took off, after learning of the murder of her former lover and fellow MEK pioneer R.J. Coins. Leon discovers that Sky Road is now the center of “bad MEK”, which involves implanting black market weapons and stolen military technology. Leon attempts to find Coins’ murderer, while trying to clean up Sky Road.

Major Bummer
Major Bummer was a humorous comic book produced by DC Comics in the late 1990s. It was created by writer John Arcudi and artist Doug Mahnke.

Two alien college students (named Zinnak and Yoof) are doing their thesis on heroes in Earth culture. To further their study, they send through the mail EEM’s or Extreme Enhancement Modules that, when opened, attach themselves to the heart of the recipient endowing them with superpowers.

The main character of Major Bummer was Lou Martin. Lou was a slacker who, due to the incompetence of Yoof received an EEM instead of Martin Louis, an upwardly mobile young lawyer and philanthropist. Lou received a new muscular body that is inhumanly strong and has super-human intelligence. Unfortunately, because Lou is so lazy, he is only able to use his intelligence either subconsciously or during moments of extreme concentration. Despite this flaw, Lou was an erudite and intelligent individual already. The great irony being that his limitations were always his own fault and he enjoyed being a slacker ; unlike most superheroes, gaining powers was actually an inconvenience to him. Lou’s EEM was designed to attract trouble and the other superhumans whom Martin would have chosen to lead.

The other “Superheroes” included : Val Andrist, the environmentalist daughter of an Ice Cream magnate who could fly, Francis Dutton, an aromatherapist hippie with a sonic scream, Lauren Isley, an elderly woman who could predict the future (but was so absent-minded she got confused with the past), a cat that became a giant when scared (it opened and ate her owner’s EEM by mistake, later adopted by Lauren) and “Gecko”, a nerdish man who could stick to walls and took the concept of being a superhero too seriously.

The EEM’s were also gifted to a group of supervillains and attracted to one another in order to ensure battles would occur (most notably the loser-turned-monster Nunzio whom Lou accidentally brain damaged via unintentional electrocution). Other stories involved a Nazi dinosaur from a parallel universe named Tyrannosaurus Reich, a demon-possessed toddler, alien worms that ate everything, an overly adoring fan of Lou’s that tried to kill him to make him more famous and an alien time traveler that destroyed time leading to Lou’s future self recruiting the present day Lou to battle the time traveller.

Major Bummer was cancelled after issue 15 due to poor sales although it had a cult following- “Sales were bad and there was just no way to keep this book going”, wrote editor Peter Tomasi in the final letter pages of the last issue.

Checkmate
Checkmate
Checkmate is a fictional covert operations agency within the DC Comics universe. It first appeared in Action Comics #598 and proceeded to have its own ongoing title in Checkmate! (vol. 1). In the wake of events depicted in the mini-series The OMAC Project and Infinite Crisis, Checkmate has been re-chartered as a United Nations Security Council-affiliated agency and has its own new series, Checkmate (vol. 2).

The Checkmate organization was created by Paul Kupperberg, John Byrne and Steve Erwin, first appearing in Action Comics #598 in 1988. The precursor to this fictional organization was known as the Agency, first appearing in Vigilante #36. Harry Stein was appointed Valentina Vostok’s replacement in The Agency’s command position by Amanda Waller. Stein later sought out the most stable personnel available from the American and international intelligence and law enforcement communities to form Checkmate. His agency would field only the best-trained and well-equipped of agents, working under the strictest rules of secrecy. For the organizational structure of the re-organized Agency, Stein chose the game of chess as his working model.

Stein brought in Gary Washington (Knight One) and Black Thorn as Checkmate operatives, both of whom were his friends, and both of whom were introduced during his run on Vigilante.

Checkmate! was at various times involved with the other government agencies in the DC Comics universe, primarily the Suicide Squad, which resulted in the crossover “The Janus Directive”. Checkmate! was canceled after 33 issues but the organization continued to appear, mostly in titles related to either the government or Batman.

After the events of the mini-series The OMAC Project, a precursor to the Infinite Crisis limited series, the Checkmate organization was re-organized and its title was revived with Checkmate volume 2. This volume is scheduled to end after publication of its 31st issue dated December 2008

Firebrand
Firebrand is a name that has been used by four heroes by DC Comics.

This is Alex Sanchez

In February 1996, DC introduced a third Firebrand, former police detective Alejandro ‘Alex’ Sanchez. After nearly dying in an explosion that destroyed his apartment, Sanchez underwent experimental surgery to restore his mobility. The surgery was paid for by local philanthropist Noah Hightower, who later approached Sanchez with a special opportunity. Hightower offered Sanchez a suit of advanced armor which, when combined with the implants, would give Sanchez enhanced strength and speed for a period up to four hours. After Sanchez’s partner was attacked during an investigation, he agreed to become the superhero Firebrand. In addition to enhanced strength, Sanchez’s armor emits a greenish flame, giving him a demonic appearance.

Sanchez’s tenure as Firebrand lasted only nine issues of his self-titled comic. He reappeared in JSA: Secret Files #2, where he is stabbed in the throat and apparently dies in Roulette’s underground gaming arena, the House, at the hands of a drugged Checkmate knight.
